TPU vs TPE: Which Flexible Filament Fits Your Project?

TPE is an umbrella family; TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is the most common member used in FDM filament. In practice, most flexible filament sold today is TPU-based.

What to expect from TPU

Higher abrasion resistance, better oil and chemical resistance, and stable mechanical properties across repeated flex cycles. Prints reliably on direct-drive machines across our 65A–95A range.

When TPE makes sense

Generic soft TPE grades offer a lower price point and very high elongation, but tend to be stringier, harder to feed, and less consistent in diameter over spool length. For production quality we recommend TPU unless the application strictly requires the softest feel available.

Bottom line
